Traveling South?
Franklin & Marshall’s Metro New York and Florida Regional Chapters are hosting an unusual and exciting event in Miami next month. If you happen to be traveling anywhere near Miami on December 4, please consider attending our Reception & Presentation in celebration of Art/Basel/Miami featuring Renee Vara ’89, CEO, Vara Global Fine Arts, LLC. More information and registration information are available on the Franklin & Marshall website.
Fillings Fine Clothing & Iron Hill Brewery - College Row Pioneers
Next time you’re on campus, stop into the first businesses to open in College Row. Fillings offers an impressive array of sophisticated accessories and clothing for men and women and provides a lovely atmosphere in which to shop. They offer tuxedo rentals and alterations as well. In the coming weeks, they will introduce lines that are suited to our students such as Joe’s Jeans, Hudson Jeans, Ella Moss Sportswear for women and J. McGlaughlin for the guys.
Iron Hill plans to open late this month and promises to be a great new addition to the terrific restaurants in Lancaster. The Lancaster site is their sixth in the Mid Atlantic region and we are looking forward to welcoming them to town.
Talk to Your Student regarding the Top 5 Myths About Jobs, Internships & Graduate School (from Career Services)
1. Seeking a position starts with building a resume.
- Your resume is not the first step but the third after gaining focus and direction and conducting preparatory research.
- Writing a resume without knowing your target field/industry/school is like writing a book report without reading the book
2. The internet is the best place to search for a position.
- Less than 10% of positions arise from internet postings
- The internet is best used for exploring paths and researching employers and graduate
3. I don’t need an internship or research experience until junior year.
- As a senior, you will be competing for full-time positions with students who have had 2-3 internships and/or research experiences
- Internships and research experiences clarify your values and goals, build skills, provide real-life experience, and let you try out a possible after-college path
4. Networking is optional.
- About 80% of positions come about through networking
- Networking is not asking for a job, emailing a resume and asking a contact what s/he can do for you, manipulating others, or schmoozing
- Networking is contributing to building a high-quality relationship over time by researching your contact’s organization, being clear about your values and goals, and communicating competently and with enthusiasm
5. Career Services is just for Business majors.
- Career Services supports all majors in exploring career options in for-profit, non-profit, and government fields and in considering graduate and professional schools
- The plans and action-steps you can develop with Career Services can be used to find an internship or job, or help in gaining admission to graduate or professional school
Encourage your student to seek out the assistance of our able Career Services staff who will help them:
- Understand their strengths and challenges
- Define their interests
- Translate dreams into plans and goals
- Articulate the value and applicability of their majors
- Research and expand new possibilities
- Develop a network
- Learn how to highlight their experiences
Senior Parents
Mark your calendars for the big weekend:
Baccalaureate Ceremony: Friday, May 16, 2:00 pm (typically lasts 75 to 90 min.)
Post Baccalaureate Reception: Immediately following Baccalaureate
Commencement Ceremony: Saturday, May 17, 10:00 am (typically lasts 2 hours)
Post Commencement Reception for all: immediately following Commencement
Franklin & Marshall does not limit the number of guests for these ceremonies, whether the events take place inside or out. No tickets needed.
If you’ve received a mailing at home from Signature Announcements encouraging you to order commencement announcements, please be aware that this company is not affiliated with Franklin & Marshall College. The bookstore on campus will be sending information home in February regarding the company with whom we contract for this service, Herff Jones. Please contact Debra Schwanke, the Bookstore’s general manager at 717.291.4093 with any questions.
MSRA Infections in the News
Dr. Marianne Kelly, Director of Health Services has encouraged our students to take precautions to prevent staph or MRSA skin infections by practicing good hygiene. Please re-emphasize these points with your student:
- Keep hands clean by washing thoroughly with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage until healed.
- Avoid contact with other people's wounds or bandages.
- Avoid sharing personal items such as towels or razors.
She recommends the following website for more information: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dhqp/ar_mrsa_ca_public.html. Also, influenza shots are still available for students at $5 a shot. A nurse’s appointment can be scheduled by calling 717.291.4082.
College Row Parking
We, in tandem with College Row management, are doing our best to inform our students that about parking policies at College Row. Unfortunately the policies are not being followed and vehicles are being towed. There is plenty of parking for residents in marked spots. It’s an expensive mistake to park in the clearly marked "No Overnight Parking" spots. Students should direct any questions to Allison Reilly, Community Manager at areilly@campusapts.com.
End of the Year Giving
During the final weeks of the calendar year, philanthropy is on many peoples’ minds. Franklin & Marshall’s fiscal year runs through June 30, 2008, however for many families there are obvious tax advantages to end-of-year giving.
Unrestricted gifts to the Franklin & Marshall Fund put your passion for the College into action immediately by supporting the everyday activities of our students and faculty.
Restricted gifts to one of the College’s special projects allow you to invest in something especially important to you (and to your child).
Most parents recently received a solicitation mailing. Please consider acting on it today by doing one of the following:
- Mail in a check.
- Make a credit card gift (on-line at
www.fandm.edu/giving or by calling 800.955.6654).
- Make a gift of securities.
- Call me to facilitate any of these options.
This year, for the first time, you may designate your Franklin & Marshall Fund gift to support a specific academic department. You may also choose to honor someone (your child or a favorite professor, for example) with your gift.
Thank you for your consideration!
Have a lovely Thanksgiving Holiday!
All the best,
