Parents E-Newsletter -- December 2007

Dear Parents,

Hopefully by now your student has recovered from the stress of end-of-semester exams and papers and can enjoy a nice break. We’ll be eager to see the students back for classes on Tuesday, January 22, 2008. In the meantime, enjoy!

"How'd you do?"

As you know, federal privacy laws prevent the College from providing access to grades to parents but we encourage you to talk with your student about his/her performance. Students have on-line access to their grades via My Diplomat one day after professors post them. On-line grading is now open and the faculty will post grades through Wednesday, January 2. First year students are sometimes disappointed with their first semester grades. Remind your student that he/she is to be congratulated for making the transition from high school to college and that the first semester makes up only 1/8 of his/her GPA. It may be a helpful exercise to discuss openly with your student what went well this semester and why, along with what could have gone better and why. Also, take the opportunity to learn more about the courses your student has chosen for second semester by taking a look at our course catalog.

"If this had been an actual emergency..."

The first test of our emergency alert system (siren, text message and e-mail) was performed on Wednesday, December 5 at noon. If you haven’t yet signed up to be included in the emergency alert, and if your student hasn’t registered you, please go to www.fandm.edu/emergencyalert.xml and follow the instructions. And ask your student if he/she has registered - if not, have them sign up immediately. If you received a text alert, you discovered that part of the message was cut off. And, though e-mail alerts were received intact, some deliveries were delayed by our SPAM filtering system. Both of these issues have been corrected. These tests will be conducted quarterly (January, April, July and October) on the first Wednesday of the each month at 12 noon.

Winter Break is a Great Time for Students to:

Identify potential careers
* Not sure about a direction or major? Take the FOCUS test in FandMConnect.com and discuss the results with a career coach
Start an internship search
* Wondering about possible internships? Research companies, non-profit organizations, government offices using Vault, Internships USA, Spotlight On Careers and other resources in FandMConnect.com
Explore a career path
* Thinking about what life is like as a ___________? Use the alumni tab in FandMConnect.com to identify and contact alumni who are in your area of interest
* One idea is to draft an email asking to shadow the alum for a few hours over break; for maximum impact, ask a career coach to check your draft!

End-Of Year Charitable Giving

Your tax-year-end gifts are most welcome and appreciated here at Franklin & Marshall. If you believe that Franklin & Marshall is gaining momentum in its aspiration to be recognized nationally as a top liberal arts college; if you think that the College is doing a great job in fulfilling its mission; if you would like your gift to not only fulfill your own philanthropic goals but also have a direct, positive impact on your student, then please make a gift today to the Franklin & Marshall Fund and put your passion into action. Giving on our secure site gives you the opportunity to make your gift in honor of your student or a favorite professor and also allows your Franklin & Marshall Fund gift to be made in support of financial aid/scholarships, academic departments, athletic teams, etc. This site also provides you with an opportunity to support a special project of high priority to the College.

The College’s Benjamin Franklin Society, our donor recognition society, celebrates gifts of $1,787 (Franklin & Marshall’s founding year) and above. If you can give at this leadership level, fantastic! But if not, all gifts make a difference and are tremendously appreciated.

Instructions regarding giving the College gifts of securities are found here.

Please take a look at our important instructions regarding end-of-year giving for 2007 tax credit.

Please contact me directly with any questions or concerns about making a gift.

And, thank you to so many of you who have already given during this fiscal year (July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2008).

As always, thank you for sharing your child with us! All the best to you and your family during this holiday season and in the New Year.

Keep in touch,
