Welcome to the Lancaster County
Digitization Project (LCDP)

The LCDP is a county-wide consortium of cultural institutions interested in digitizing Lancaster county newspaper and manuscript collections. The consortium was formed in the spring of 2004, with regularly scheduled meetings at the Lancaster County Historical Society, and other member institutions. The consortium welcomes additional Lancaster county institutions interested in digitizing and preserving their historic, print based collections. Current Projects

The New Holland Clarion -

PA Newspaper Project (PaNP) - Fall 2004
- LCDP has recommended portions of the following Lancaster county titles for microfilming: The New Holland Clarion, The Linden Hall Echo, and The Etownian.

[update Dec. 2004] The New Holland Clarion has been selected for preservation microfilming by the PaNP. The statewide selection committee identified it as one of the top two titles reviewed. The PaNP will begin filming the early years of The New Holland Clarion (1873 to 1940) this winter!

[update July 2005] The New Holland Clarion (1873-1950) is now available on microfilm at the ELANCO Library, the Lancaster County Historical Society, and the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley.

[update March 2007] The New Holland Clarion (1873-1950) has been selected for digitization by the Office of Commonwealth Libraries/LSTA. Project completion is scheduled for summer of 2008!


Columbia Spy -

LSTA Grant Applications 2005
- LCDP is currently drafting two LSTA grant applications to digitize portions of the Millersville University Snapper, and the Columbia Spy.

[update Feb. 2005] The Columbia Spy (1830-1850; 1870-1889) has been selected for digitization by the PA Dept. of Education/LSTA!

[update Dec. 2005] The Columbia Spy (1850-1870) has been digitized and incorporated into the Penn State PA Civil War Newspapers Collection

[update March 2006] The complete run of the Columbia Spy (1830-1889) has been digitized and made available through the Lancaster County Historical Society


Franklin & Marshall College Student Newspaper -

Franklin and Marshall College has digitized eighty-six years of its student newspaper, The College Reporter. Click on the link to view the paper! F&M College Reporter (1915-2001)


Lancaster Journal (Weekly) -

F&M has received an $8,000 grant from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation to digitize twenty years of the Lancaster Journal weekly newspaper, 1816-1836!

[update October 2006] Digitization of the Lancaster Journal (Weekly) is currently underway, and will be made available in the summer of 2007.

[update October 2007] Digitization of the Lancaster Journal (Weekly) is complete, and can be accessed at the F&M Student Newspaper site. Please select Lancaster Journal (1816-1836) from the drop-down Publications menu.

LCDP First Year Results - 2004/05
Built communication channels and collaborative effort among 8 local institutions.
Evaluated leading software options and vendors for digitization.
Preservation microfilming of the New Holland Clarion newspaper through the NEH funded Pennsylvania Newspapers Project.
Digitization of the Columbia Spy newspaper (1850-1870) through Penn State's PA Civil War Newspapers Collection.
Received LSTA grant funding for digitization of the Columbia Spy newspaper (1830-1850, 1870-1889).
Digitization of The College Reporter student newspaper (1987-2001) through the F&M President's Office/Friends of the Library.

LCDP Second Year Results - 2005/06
Presented poster and webinar sessions on cooperative digitization at regional conferences.
Received local press coverage of the LCDP, and Columbia Spy newspaper digitization.
Received Millersville University Friends of the Library funding for digitization of The Snapper student newspaper (1995-2005).
Digitization of the remaining Columbia Spy newspaper (1830-1850, 1870-1889) through the PA Dept. of Education/LSTA and the Lancaster County Historical Society
Digitization of The College Reporter student newspaper - phase 2 (1964-1987) through the F&M Friends of the Library.
Conducted site visits to Penn State University Libraries Digitization & Preservation Department, Lehigh University Digital Library, and OCLC Preservation Services.

Conducted one day LCDP Strategic Planning Retreat at Millersville University.
